The Lord Jesus Christ: The Biblical Doctrine of the Person and Work of Christ
Brandon D. Crowe
My decision to include this book in the “beginner” section may be debatable. After all, it is 400 pages long. But I have read difficult Christological works, and this is not difficult. Instead, the book seems to be written for your average Christian who wants to know Christ better. There is an intentional doxological focus in this book. I think that this is the place to start if you want to know the person and work of Christ better.
2 - Intermediate
God the Son Incarnate: The Doctrine of Christ
Stephen J. Wellum
This is the best single volume work on the doctrine of Christ. That crown used to belong to Donald Macleod’s book The Person of Christ, but Wellum’s large work is better, more readable, and is simply a more up-to-date masterpiece of theology. This is my favorite book on Christology and I can’t recommend it highly enough to enough people.
3 - Advanced
Christology of the Late Fathers
edited by Edward R. Hardy
For the person who has read Wellum and wants to go deeper, this is the book for them. In this volume you will learn about the Cappadocian Fathers, and spend time reading the masters: Athanasius, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Gregory of Nyssa among others. Reading the Church Fathers is important, and we need more of it in evangelical and Reformed churches
