Church History in Plain Language

There is a reason this is probably the most assigned text book on church history: it excellently boils down a rather lengthy and complex history into one readable volume.

2000 Years of Christ’s Power (5 Book Set)

Although this set is large, I think it is extremely readable and approachable for Christians from any experience level. If I knew someone who was really sincere about wanting to know church history, and they were ready to do serious study, I would recommend this to them even if they were a beginner. Needham’s set really is that well-written and approachable.

The Story of Christianity (2 Volumes)

If the Bruce Shelley history text is for college students, this is the set of books that is usually assigned to seminary students. It is a more in-depth journey into church history, and again for those interested in church history from a deeper angle, this set is probably the best set in this size.

The Division of Christendom: Christianity in the Sixteenth Century

This is a great single volume history of the Reformation. It not only tells the history from the perspective of the Reformers and Anabaptists, but from the perspective of the Roman church as well. One standout aspect of this book is the way Hillerbrand focuses not just on the religious debates, but on the politics and the way those also shape events.

Calvin’s Company of Pastors

This is an incredible book that gives a snapshot of one moment in time during the Reformation in Geneva, Switzerland. It might even be my favorite book that I read during Seminary. The true story of life in Geneva and of brothers serving together continues to bless and inform me. I think many Christians will read this book with fascinated interest.
