New Morning Mercies

This is a book that can be read by Christians of every age and maturity. My wife and I read it together for years, and nearly every person we have ever recommended it to has found incredible help by reading it. This is one of the easiest all-around recommendations to make.

Daily Doctrine: A One-Year Guide to Systematic Theology

image/svg+xml writer Kevin DeYoung

Reading this book, I felt one incredible emotion: pride. Not the unbiblical kind of pride, but the sort of glowing admiration for a fellow brother who accomplished something really amazing. In this book, fellow PCA Pastor Kevin DeYoung manages to introduce his readers to the intimidating subject of systematic theology in a way that is explicable to the average church member. This book includes five readings for each week. At the end of a year, the reader has received a crash-course in systematic theology. Each entry is about a page long (500 words or so). The book is the opposite of intimidating, and I hope that more and more Christians and families get this book and use it.

I have long recommended Tripp’s book New Morning Mercies to those looking for a wonderful daily devotional. This new book, Everyday Gospel, is also excellent – especially for those who have already read New Morning Mercies.

Daily Readings from The Christian in Complete Armour

William Gurnall’s book The Christian in Complete Armour is a true masterpiece of Christian spirituality. It reflects the deepest and most mature spirituality that can be found among the Puritans – which is saying something, indeed. However, the prose of Gurnall left something to be desired, as did the three-volume length of the work! Now, Moody publishers have done us a tremendous service by producing a book of choice selections from Gurnall’s masterpiece with modernized language. It is rich, mature, and immensely helpful.

The Promises of God

image/svg+xml writer Charles Spurgeon

The central conceit of this book by Charles Spurgeon is that it is 365 entries, each centered around a different promise from God found in Scripture. Reading this will amaze you at just how many promises God makes to his people in Scripture, and you will be richly helped by Spurgeon’s reminders for struggling saints.

The Early Church Fathers: Daily Readings

image/svg+xml writer Nick Needham

For the person who would like to have an introduction to the early church fathers, this might be a great foot in the door. Each month includes selections from a different Father, including John Chrysostom, Cyprian of Carthage, Basil of Caesarea, St. Jerome, Gregory of Nyssa, St. Augustine, and Athanasius among others.
