The Death of Porn: Men of Integrity Building a World of Nobility

Breaking free from pornography is a difficult but important topic. I appreciate Ray Ortlund’s book because he presents a vision of holiness that among other things appeals to the innate sense that men have that the world needs us not to be compromised and disabled by sin. This book reads as an encouragement and a clarion call for men, especially.

Rescue Plan: Charting a Course to Restore Prisoners of Pornography

This is a book that is written more for those who are encouraging and helping others to escape from the clutches of pornography. However, it seems to also be for those wanting the same escape for themselves. The greatest strength of this book is that it is both realistic and gospel-centered. Here is what I mean: the authors do not rely on shaming or will-power in order to help men escape from the clutches of porn. Instead, they appeal to the gospel’s liberation from fear, from judgment, and from paranoia that we may sometimes be tempted to lean on to motivate men to stop destroying their hearts and minds at the phone or computer screen. This book is more about helping others to develop healthy affections than it is about developing specific habits. The book puts as much emphasis on developing affections for God as it does on developing good habits and removing temptations.
