The Lord’s Supper: Answers to Common Questions

A step between the beginner and the intermediate book, this is what I would have someone read who is used to only thinking of the Lord’s Supper as a participatory thing that depends entirely upon the one doing the eating, drinking, and remembering. Mathison is an excellent proponent of Calvin’s view that in the Lord’s Supper, something more than a memorial is taking place. In fact, the Holy Spirit is bringing Christ to us.

The Lord’s Supper as a Means of Grace: More Than a Memory

A step above the previous book, Barcellos is the book I would take someone to if they want to go deeper in understanding just what are the biblical arguments for believing that the Lord’s Supper has a spiritual component and is more than a memorial. This was a short and easy read, and left a big impact on me and how I think of the Supper.

The Lord’s Supper as the Sign and Meal of the New Covenant

An excellent work of biblical theology, Waters is deeply skilled at showing through all of Scripture the role that covenant meals play in ministering to the souls of God’s people.

Given for You: Reclaiming Calvin’s Doctrine of the Lord’s Supper

A magnificent deep-dive into Calvin’s own view of the Supper. While the previous books do an excellent job of explaining and summarizing Scripture’s teaching, this book in particular is focused on how Calvin himself explained the Scriptural teaching. This is another book that changed how I explain the Lord’s Supper when fencing the table.
